BE FAITHFUL

I just watched ‘Hacksaw Ridge” I thought it was a good movie. Desmond Doss was an interesting individual. He was definitely grounded in his faith. I found it interesting how his childhood and family life played into to his decision not to carry a weapon to war. Not much was referenced as to a theological basis except for “Thou shall not kill.” He had a couple close calls early in life almost killing his brother and father in fits of rage. I believe the scripture and life events shaped him into the individual he became.

I am reminded of the Assemblies of God early position of pacifism. The fellowship couldn’t understand how an individual could take up arms against a people and return during peacetime and share the gospel. I believe they felt the people may not be receptive to their message of love and compassion. This position ended in the late 60’s when the fellowship adopted a position of patriotism supporting the troops and their endeavors. I believe it was a weak move in which they succumbed to culture rather than holding strong to theology.

I never considered war to be murder. Our nation has typically taken the position to rescue nations from tyrants and evil dictators. If our nation had not intervened in the wars that it has who knows the untold cruelty that would have continued and the number of innocent lives that would have been taken. War is a necessary evil in this world.

Private Doss first rejected and mistreated by his company did not surrender his beliefs. Later his fellow soldiers would come to appreciate his faith. It is interesting how people’s attitude change when they see there is benefit and substance to once faith. Despite his position not to carry a weapon, Private Doss did everything in his power to be the best soldier/medic that he could be in the service of his nation.

I wonder if our nation would be in the crisis it now finds itself if Christians would be as dedicated to their beliefs as Private Doss. Evangelist Henry Varley said, “The world has yet to see what God can do through a man who is totally yielded to Him.” D.L Moody, captivated by these words and resolved said “By the Grace of God, I will be that man!” What is more important in your life your faith or what men think of you? Will you stand for God no matter the storms life throws in your direction?
