Who can deny that our great nation is in perilous times? Racial tension is at it highest level dare say I since the Civil War. Blame can be cast however, this has only increased the tension. Terror domestic or foreign has also risen to extreme levels most recently with the attack on Las Vegas. North Korea has all but declared war on the United States, threatening nuclear warfare at every turn. Our nation has endured two category hurricanes back to back devastating much of the south east. Political turmoil has caused a stalemate in solving our nations issues. Conservatives and Liberals are at each other’s throats making nasty untruthful claims. These groups are unwilling to work together to alleviate our nation’s challenges.
You can deny some of these claims but not all. We must agree our nation is in a precarious position. The moral fabric has been torn asunder. The values on which our nation was founded have been thrown out. The people of our nation have grown more hedonistic than ever. The “Me” generation born in the 80’s and 90’s is coming of age beginning to raise its ugly head. This generation places self before all else.
It is no wonder that abortion, pornography, sexual immorality, homosexuality, transgenderism, and pedophilia moral outrages at some point in history have become more common place and acceptable. Drug abuse is not just destroying homes and marriages, it is literally killing individuals. Issues once considered psychological disorders are being accepted as normal behavior.
When you consider the condition of our nation’s morality and recent horrific events one must question if they are related. In Scripture, there is ample evidence of God tiring of the immoral behavior of cities and nations. Has he become disgusted with the United States? The United Nation despite claims to the contrary was established upon the principle of God’s Word, whether you agree it is a Christian nation or not one must agree that Scriptural principles have been woven into the nation’s moral fabric from the beginning.
The United States has not merely forgotten God, it has out right rejected God or the idea that there even is a God. It is not merely a rise of Agnosticism rather hate for the very idea of God has rose among the people. When you consider a generation that is interested in self-emerging it would have no room for God. With God comes a call to holy living, Holy living invalidates the very immoral behavior that brings this generation pleasure.
Prior to the flood, people rejected the message of Noah prophesying judgment. As a result, all were destroyed. Abraham pleaded with God to save Sodom and Gomorrah that it might be saved. No righteous individuals were found and thus the cities were destroyed in judgment. These people like our nation rejected God and his teachings. They were more interested in pleasing themselves in the moment than seeking God’s favor.
I believe our nation has been in judgment. If nothing else it results from original sin when death and destruction were unleashed upon the earth. The only answer to sin is repentance. I wrote of national repentance a few times within my blog and the results. If this “Me” generation is truly self-consumed it must repent to preserve self.
Jonah was sent to Nineveh prophesying judgment for the nations wickedness had risen before God. Israel while under King Josiah had grown to a comparable situation with its immorality and pagan worship. Both were on the verge of destruction. There only hope repentance. Repentance is a change as if you were walking in one direction and now you due a 180 degree turn in the opposite direction. You have a complete change in behavior from sinful pleasure to holy living.
The King of Nineveh when hearing Jonah’s message called for national fasting, prayer and, repentance. King Josiah is despair tore his clothing and repented before God. The Israelites were spared from destruction as were the Ninevites. God was pleased with their response and willingness to change.
More recently a nation was in distress, England. During World War II the entire British army was stranded on the beaches at Dunkirk. They were at the mercy of the Luftwaffe, German Airforce. The German’s were strafing them with gun fire they had little or no shelter and were being decimated. King George VI called for a day of national prayer and repentance.
The nation responded with millions flooding the churches to pray. Clouds appeared which grounded the Luftwaffe basically halting their campaign of destruction. The Channel was reported to have become calm like never. Civilians flocked to the beaches of Dunkirk in private boats able to rescue the soldiers from certain demise.
God responded to prayer and repentance in Scripture as well as modern day. Our nation has hope but only if it responds in like kind. Fasting, Prayer, and Repentance are in order. II Chronicles 7:14 states, “Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and (repent) turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.”
