Have you ever felt like you are at “Rock Bottom?” Many people find themselves in positions of losing everything that has meaning in their lives. Perhaps they have lost their job, house, friends, and/or family. Few know what it is like to be homeless. When was the last time you had to go to a shelter, sleep under a bridge or on a park bench? Can you imagine desiring slop fed to pigs due to your extreme hunger?
These are all physical challenges. Physical rock bottom is temporal. Spiritual rock bottom is eternal. There are people in this world who have never heard the Gospel of Jesus. They live each day without hope. Can you imagine believing that once we die life ceases? After a great life or miserable life, it is over when you die?
I am so grateful for Jesus and the work he accomplished on the cross. He rescued all who believe from death and hell. Many will not turn to Christ until they hit rock bottom. Jesus lifts a person by giving them hope of eternal life, a better life.
Deuteronomy 28 speaks of blessings and curses. The Lord reserves blessings for those who are obedient to His Word and curses for those who reject Him. A product of belief is obedience. When we believe Jesus Christ is the Son of God who died and rose again that all who call on him will be saved, they tend to follow His teachings in obedience.
Read a portion of this chapter; “The Lord will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none. 13 The Lord will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the Lord your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom. 14 Do not turn aside from any of the commands I give you today, to the right or to the left, following other gods and serving them.” This should excite and motivate believers to be obedient to God’s Word. We find that God will bless believers physically as well as giving the gift of eternal life.
I spoke of “Rock Bottom,” my purpose was alluding to the prodigal son. He left home, squandered his inheritance, and found himself slopping pigs. He was a Jew, he was not even permitted to touch a pig and found himself having to feed them. He also was so hungry, he found him eating with the pigs. After reflecting on his situation, he decided it would be better to go home and live as his father’s servant. He had hit rock bottom.
He set off for home. His father, watched out the window every day for his son. One day as he looked down the road, there he was, his son was coming. Anxious to see him, the father, ran down the road to greet him. He welcomed him by placing a ring on his finger and wrapping a robe around him. His son who thought he would live out his life as a servant was given the distinction of being his father’s son once again.
When a person hits rock bottom deciding to follow Jesus, they are welcomed into the Family of God. The prodigal’s father through a feast for his son celebrating his return, All of heaven rejoices when one calls of Jesus.
